During your next holiday, why not take a break from the beach and try to immerse yourself in the local flavor of your destination? You’d be surprised how many of the world’s tourism hubs boast ample amounts of culture and history to astound their visitors with. If you want to learn a bit about the places you’re visiting, a good place to start would be museums and heritage sites. Most attractions are tailored for out-of-town guests, and you’ll find it easy and enlightening to navigate the major sites. If you’re traveling to Majorca, it might be worth it for you to try and line your holiday up with one of the many annual festivals held on the island. The Majorca festivals model religious and historical events significant to the natives, and they are always carried out in great richness and extravagance.

One festival common to the whole of Spain that is recognized in Majorca is the Moors and Christians Festival. Held in different villages throughout the island during various months of the year, this religious and historical celebration highlights the 800 years of coexistence between Christians and Muslims in Spain. The festival is marked by a reenactment of the violent disputes between Christians and Moors, acted out on stages and in the streets. The plays can last for days and copious amounts of all-night partying supplements the drama. It’s a history lesson and a party all rolled into one holiday.

Though the Moors and Christians Festival often manifests as the most colorful celebration on the island, don’t be discouraged if you miss it. There are many Majorca festivals throughout the year, and chances are that one of them will fall during your holiday. In June, there’s Sant Antoni de Juny, where townspeople of Arta parade through the streets dressed as horses before a tremendous feast is held. July plays host to Dia de Virgen de Carmen, when the islanders recognize the patron saint of sailors by organizing parades, feasts, and the ritualistic blessing of fishing vessels. Every month of the year sees a different and unique festival, and you’ll want to do all you can to make yourself a part of one.
